John Colclough — Genealogist, Family Historian, and Welsh Heritage Researcher
I’m a genealogist based in Wales, specialising in uncovering Welsh family histories through careful research, clear evidence, and thoughtful storytelling. My work brings together archives, maps, local history, and lived experience to help individuals and families understand where they come from — and why it matters.
For me, genealogy is more than tracing names. It’s about revealing the lives behind them: the choices people made, the places they lived, the communities they shaped, and the stories that echo across generations.
My Approach.
Where memory meets map and story
Welsh genealogy has its own challenges — surname patterns, chapel communities, fragmented households, migration, and the complexities of rural and industrial life. I specialise in navigating these patterns with a methodical, evidence‑based approach.
My work combines:
- Archival research in Welsh and UK collections
- Census reconstruction for fragmented or missing households
- Surname analysis and aliasing
- Local history to place families in context
- Narrative storytelling to bring findings to life
Every project is handled with care, clarity, and respect for the people whose stories we uncover.

Kind Words.
“Thanks John … for the great trip you gave us. K and her husband were here over Christmas, he got left out of a lot of conversations about Wales. All of us enjoyed that trip very much. So besides being a great genealogist, you are a great travel guide too. We all think you made our trip so very special. So thank you again, and you might just find us your way again. Stay well, stay happy and thank you so much…”
