❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Genealogy and You – John Gerard Colclough
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on the scope—whether you’re tracing a single ancestral line, exploring a full family tree, or commissioning hourly research. I offer staged projects with clear budgets and optional add-ons, so you can choose what suits your goals.
How long will it take?
Most projects take 4–8 weeks per stage, depending on complexity and archival access. I’ll keep you updated throughout, and we can adjust the pace if needed.
What do I need to provide?
Any known names, dates, locations, or family stories—even fragments or hunches can help. If you have charts, certificates, or previous research, feel free to share them.
What will I receive?
You’ll receive a written report with narrative context, copies of key documents (where permitted), and optional visual materials such as maps, overlays, or keepsakes. Each project is tailored to your story.
Can you trace ancestors who migrated abroad?
Yes—I specialize in diaspora research, including families who moved between the UK, North America, Australia, and beyond. I use land records, migration trails, and spatial overlays to ground your family’s story in real terrain.
Will I be told about sensitive discoveries?
Some family histories include difficult or unexpected findings—such as illegitimacy, adoption, criminal records, or causes of death. At the outset, I’ll ask whether you wish to be informed of such discoveries, and I’ll always approach them with care and discretion.
Do you include information about living relatives?
I do not disclose details of living individuals without consent. If a previously unknown living relative is discovered, I’ll contact you first. If both parties agree, I can help facilitate contact.
Is my information kept private?
Yes. I treat all client materials with confidentiality and care. Your data is stored securely and used only for the purpose of your project. I comply with UK GDPR standards and respect the privacy of living individuals.
